Weaving stars

In September a little girl, Hana* joined the Denisa Day Care Centre in Dobrun, Romania. Hana’s mother asked Stand by Me to accept the young girl into the programme so that she could receive care, food, educational help and take part in fun activities. On Fridays at the Denisa Day Care Centre the girls take part in craft activities including knitting and making rugs from corn husks. This year a skilled rug maker moved to Dobrun, she weaves ‘Oltenian’ rugs, a beautiful rug known throughout Romania. Some girls were able to visit her and see her work; she also agreed to teach the kids in the Denisa Day Care Centre the craft. The lady’s husband built two looms and for the day care centre.

The girls have learned the basics and love practicing weaving the rugs, they really want to improve on their skills and it is lovely to see children who once had no hope enjoy learning a skill.

Cami, Stand by Me Romania Director asked little Hana what she wanted to be when she grows up, she replied “I want to be a star!” Cami thought that maybe she wanted to be a famous singer or actress but when she asked which, Hana replied “No, I want to weave rugs.”

Hana loves weaving with her hands. Thanks to the day care centre the young children, in the midst of a very poor town, can now form their own dream and we can help them gain the skills to get there. Read more about our work in Romania here.
