Meet Grace

Aged 8, Kenya

Grace lives with her parents, sisters and niece in a two room house in a compound that her parents are taking care of. The owner of the land lives in the main town and has allowed them to live there for free if they look after the land. They have planted some green vegetables, but are not allowed to eat them unless they buy them from the owner. He allows them a few days credit. A mattress on the floor and two small blankets is what Grace, her sisters and their niece sleep on every night. Their parent's bedroom has a small bed frame and they share the room with their chickens. They have dug a pit latrine and put iron sheets around it but it does not have a door or a roof. There is a well a few metres from the house, which is their source of water. Her mother boils their water before drinking and they use firewood to cook. Grace's father recently joined a money savings and lending group and he is already seeing the hope of making better financial decisions for his family. Grace is a calm and happy young girl who loves helping her mother in the house. She enjoys playing dodgeball or skipping rope with her sisters. She really loves mathematics.

Where Grace lives

The Open Arms project is joining the Stand by Me family in January 2022. Open Arms International was founded in 2006 to meet the immediate needs of orphaned and abandoned children in western Kenya who were suffering from a wide variety of life-threatening diseases. After the 2008 political violence left thousands of children orphaned, abandoned and homeless, the project grew to support more children. Today, the Open Arms Village is now home to over 150 children with 10 purpose-built family homes.
